Photo sensitive anode and reversible fuel cell for hydrogen generation from water

Cross-section of a cell: fuel cell to produce hydrogen from water The scheme of synthesis conditions Cross-section of a cell: fuel cell to produce hydrogen from water

Cross cut of the designed cell : 1 – proton conductive membrane; 2 – filter paper; 3 – photo sensitive anodic catalyst; 4 – catalyst for protons’ reduction; 5 – collecting netting; 6 – water.

Area of applications

The photo sensitive anode can be used for hydrogen generation from water in the reversible fuel cell with the option of hydrogen accumulation. The accumulated hydrogen can be used for electricity generation in the reversible cell in the direct regime of operation.

Brief description

The photo sensitive anodes were developed from photocatalysts based on a mixture of oxides of iron (II) and (III) carried on the 2D-sized carrier substrates with graphene or carbon subnitride. The schematic diagram of photoelectrochemical cell was designed and assembled to produce hydrogen from water.

Expected properties

Optimization of way for producing hydrogen by water splitting under the photo radiation.

Advantages

Photo anodes based on mixture of oxides of iron (II) and (III) carried on the 2D-sized carrier substrates with graphene or carbon subnitride gave the potential difference up to 360 – 380 mV. It allowed to produce hydrogen with productivity up to 14.9 mkmole/(gcath).

Project development

Optimum composition of photo sensitive anodes (loadings and ratio of main components, the 2-D carriers and modifying additives) as well as a method of catalytic anode are developed. Also we designed the test model of reversible fuel cell.
