Vacuum thermal desorption (TDS) and second hydrogenation curves for Mg+IMC+C composite.

Applications

Hydrogen storage materials based on nanocomposite materials with catalytic additions, especially as a tanks for a hydrogen fuel cell.

Brief description

New magnesium-based (Mg-IMC, Mg-IMC-C) composite materials as well as new intermetallic compounds based on R-Mg-T (where R- rare earth metal; T-transition metal) have been obtained. The peculiarities of conventional and electrochemical hydrogenation of obtained material have been investigated.

Expected properties

Technology of the synthesis/obtaining nanocomposites will be optimized:
1) optimal compositions will be fixed;
2) reverse hydrogen capacity higher than 5.5 wt.%;
3) high cyclic stability (> 100 cycles);
4) the hydrogen sorption-desorption temperature not exceed 200-300 °C.

Advantages

Efficient and safety hydrogen storage as a part of reversible green energy.

Project partners

Institute for Energy Technology, Kjeller, Norway.

Status of project

On the present stage nano-composite materials based on magnesium can reversibly absorb up to 6 wt.% of hydrogen. The combination of such capacity with the low cost of magnesium have an potential advantages compare to other more expensive systems for hydrogen storing. However, the cyclical stability of the developed materials their kinetics and sorption-desorption temperature are still not satisfied for commercial using.
