NEW HYDRIDE MATERIALS FOR HYDROGEN STORAGE

Fields of application

Hydrogen Energy - one of the most promising areas of alternative energy. A key problem of its use is the safe and compact storage of hydrogen. An effective way to store hydrogen (as opposed to using a compressed state) is its chemical bonding in metal hydrides. They can accumulate large amounts of hydrogen and inversely allocate it by minor changes in temperature and pressure.

Brief description

New Mg-based composite materials with > 5 wt.% capacity, which can effectively absorb and release hydrogen

b

Sorption curves during mechanical milling in hydrogen (a) and desorption of hydrogen (b) of Mg-based composite material compared to conventional magnesium hydride

Advantages

• Sorption-desorption of hydrogen accelerated by catalytic applications.
• Desorption of hydrogen from the material occurs at reduced temperatures (200 ° C).
• 1 kg composite material containing 690 liters of hydrogen, equivalent to 7.4 MJ of energy.

Comparing volume tanks with gas and liquid hydrogen, LaNi5H6 metal hydride and developed Mg-based composite material to 100 km mileage

Stage of development

Improved methods of mechanochemical synthesis, optimized composition of the material
