Abstract

The surface hardening of porous bushings (along internal diameter) by multiple broaching is analyzed. An intermediate deformable spacer made of compact metal is used in the process to promote the hydrostatical component of stresses and prevent a potential failure of the part. It is established that deformation is local and the deformation area moves along the height during broaching. The compaction and hardening increase toward greater radius with the number of passes. Periodic change in the direction of broaching promotes more uniform distribution of properties along the height.
