Abstract

The synthesis of Ti3AlC2 and Ti4AlN3, by isothermal sintering in vacuum is studied. The influence of the starting powders, charge composition, condition of milling and sintering temperature on the phase composition of the material is analyzed. Practically single-phase Ti3AlC2 with high density is synthesized in the range 1350–1400 °С when the aluminum content of the charge is higher than its stoichiometric amount by a factor of 1.4–1.6, for the Ti4AlN3 this factor is 1.2. It is shown that single-phase Ti3AlC2 or Ti4AlN3 or material with the required TiC (TiN) content can be synthesized by variation of aluminum content of the charge. The mechanical properties of the obtained materials in temperature ranges 20–1300 °С were investigated.
