Abstract

The Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation of erbium monobismuthide from solid erbium and liquid bismuth are determined by measuring electromotive forces in the temperature range 803–1093 K. The melting enthalpy and entropy of pure bismuth are used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of formation of erbium monobismuthide from solid components. The results obtained are compared with the relevant literature data. The interaction of erbium with p-elements of group 5 and period 5 of the Periodic Table are discussed. The energy of interatomic interaction of erbium with p-elements of group 5 decreases with greater atomic numbers of p-elements, while the energy of interatomic interaction with p-elements of period 5 increases with a greater difference in the electronegativity of components.
