Abstract

Developments made at the Frantsevich Institute for Problems of Materials Science, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, to improve the design and functional characteristics of domestic hip prostheses are reviewed. The developments are based on new materials such as tetragonal zirconia bioceramics with improved dopant composition and nanosized powder, nanostructured bioactive coatings, and new titanium alloys without toxic elements, technologies such as improved machining of ceramic heads due to special diamond nanopowders, and advanced software for design optimization and improved processing technologies.
