Abstract

The Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation of holmium silicides HoSi1–x (HoSi0,98), Ho5Si4, and Ho5Si3 from solid components are determined by measuring electromotive forces between 760 and 970 K. Holmium silicide Ho5Si3, which is the most refractory compound in the Ho-Si system, possesses the maximal thermodynamic stability. The high-temperature thermodynamic characteristics of the formation of holmium silicides are determined for the first time.
