Abstract

The effect of laser irradiation with nanosecond duration compared to irradiation with millisecond pulse duration on the structure of the surface layer of carbon steel were investigated. It is shown that after treatment of carbon steels U8 and 45 by laser with nanosecond duration the non-equilibrium austenite in the surface layer is fixed. However, the form of X-ray diffraction lines of α-Fe is not changed which is characteristic of the martensitic transformation. It is also shown that laser irradiation with a 3 ms pulse in carbon steels generates the laser quenching effect – creation the maptensit-austenitic structure. The combined effect of these lasers resulted to grinding of surface layer elements. Full text download
