Abstract

Elastic properties and adhesion strength of the duplex coatings, produced by the plasma-sprayed zirconia oxide (stabilized with yttrium oxide) deposited on the CoNiCrAlY alloy primer are studied. A model for determining normal and shear stresses in a duplex coating is developed. The fracture mechanisms of the ceramic plasma-sprayed coating on a metallic plasma-sprayed primer are established. It is shown that the tensile load creates numerous cracks in the facing ceramic coating that penetrate into metallic primer, resulting in further delamination of the ceramic coating. The increase in thickness of the face coating altered the fracture mechanism.
