Abstract

Roller presses are the most common pelleting and compacting machines for fine-grained materials in metallurgy and related industries. Rollers with replaceable tires whose working surfaces are provided with molding elements are the main units that directly exert a force effect on the material being compacted. The configuration of the pressing surface significantly influences the compaction conditions and the quality of pellets. Analysis of information sources indicates that currently there is no single systematic approach to choosing the rational surface configuration of roller press tires. A large number of process and operational parameters indicate that the choice of the rational surface configuration of press tires should be based on multivariate analysis methods. Therefore, a systematic approach to the choice of rational geometric parameters of roller press tires has been developed. In the method employing this approach, the problem in question is represented as a three-level hierarchy: options for the design of tires, rationality evaluation criteria, and the most rational tire design. A specific example shows the application of the proposed approach to select the configuration of pressing surfaces that ensure the required parameters of charge compaction with the maximum service life of tires and compliance with the operating conditions for the press within its technical characteristics. The proposed systematic approach and the developed method allow a comparative analysis to be carried out at the design stage and the geometric parameters of the pellet press roller surfaces to be evaluated for rationality. The results can be used as an integral part in the development of specialized software for the calculation and design of roller presses.
